Clare, a blind and visually impaired (BVI) advocacy and training coordinator at Envision in Mountain Home, Idaho, was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder and began experiencing vision loss later in life.
While earning a business degree online, she travelled to Washington D.C. multiple times a year for advocacy work that focused on demonstrating to senators and representatives how blind and visually impaired individuals can work, and how much they want to work, as nearly 70% are unemployed.
鈥淚 chose the business management program online so that I can open up my own business,鈥� the August 2024 graduate said. 鈥淎nd I chose to do the entrepreneurship track, which helps us learn how we can be good business owners.
鈥淭he most useful skills that I gained through the BBA program really lie in the entrepreneurship track because that one was showing me how I can incorporate marketing with advertising, coming up with a business plan.
鈥淢y main goal was to become a writer and a publisher. I didn鈥檛 really have any thoughts outside of that. Now, after graduating, I actually have my business plan written. I have looked into who my competitors are, both with coffee houses, local business stores and other publishers. And it鈥檚 very interesting because now 鈥� I can go forward and I can bring this business plan to a bank. I feel very prepared for this. It gave me everything I needed and more.鈥�
Jazmin Gallardo Carrillo
Gallardo Carrillo is a full-time student who gave birth to a son while earning a business degree online. A student success coordinator for the College of Southern Idaho, she is on track to graduate in May 2025.
Like Clare, Gallardo Carrillo hopes to apply what she learned while earning a business degree online to open her own business.
鈥淚 knew that I wanted to do something, but I didn鈥檛 know what,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 kept seeing people who would lose their jobs, or their company would shut down. They were 55 or 65 years old and didn鈥檛 know what to do with their life. They had to start over.
鈥淚 realized I could become my own boss, own my own business and not have to rely on a company like that. This program is preparing me well to start my own business. Last semester, I took Employment Law and learned a lot. I found out about things some of my previous managers didn鈥檛 know about, like liability. It was great to learn.鈥�
Gallardo Carrillo is already seeing a solid return on investment from earning a business degree online.
鈥淚 do believe this degree is going to help me achieve my goals,鈥� she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e learned so much, and I feel better prepared to take on the challenge of becoming a business owner.
