Academic Grievance Process

All students have access to policies and procedures that allow them to come forward if they believe that they have been treated unfairly by a course instructor. On this page, you’ll find a description of the Academic Grievance Process.

Start

The process starts when a student has a concern.

Instructor

Student takes concern to instructor. If the student is satisfied then the concern is resolved. If the student is not satisfied, they then take concern to the chair.

Chair

Student takes concern to the chair. If the student is satisfied then the concern is resolved. If the student is not satisfied, they then take the concern to the Dean.

Dean

Student takes concern to the Dean. If the student is satisfied then the concern is resolved. If the student is not satisfied, they then take the concern to the Provost Office.

Provost Office

The Provost Office transmits the concern for review by Preliminary Panel (includes ASBSU Vice President).

Preliminary Panel

There are two paths after review by the Preliminary Panel.

No Merit

If the Preliminary Panel determines the concern has no merit, it’s returned to the Provost Office. The Provost can then decide whether to forward the concern to the Academic Grievance Board.

Merit

If the Preliminary Panel determines the concern has merit, it’s sent to the Academic Grievance Board.

Academic Grievance Board

The Academic Grievance Board, adds a second student, conducts a hearing. The vote is conveyed to the Provost.

Results

After reviewing the vote from the Academic Grievance Board, the Provost upholds or overturns the Academic Grievance Board recommendation and notifies the student. This marks the end of the process.
